When a fictional town called Bellwick planned to replace an empty car park with a small square, the first drawings showed a fountain and several benches. However, residents asked a different question: where would people sit on a hot afternoon? The planning team therefore invited them to draw maps of the shade along their usual walking routes.
At first, the maps seemed too personal to be useful. One resident marked the path to a bakery, whereas another focused on the walk from a bus stop to a clinic. Nevertheless, the team noticed that many routes crossed the same exposed corner. As a result, the proposed trees were moved from the centre of the square to its western edge.
The revised plan did not satisfy everyone. For example, some shop owners preferred a more open view of their windows. Instead of allowing this disagreement to end the project, the team used it to compare several arrangements. In the end, the square became a lesson in how a simple question can change what a design is intended to achieve.
